Chapter Eighteen

Waves rolled up on the sand just outside city limits. The Shank Sea glistened brilliantly under the afternoon sun. A few birds flew overhead, squawking as they flapped their wings.

“Are you sure you’re strong enough to try?” The circles under Brady’s eyes deepened the nervous glance he gave Karis.

She waved him off. “I’m much stronger than you give me credit for. It’s you who is still healing from Grazier.”

Her strength wasn’t her concern, but he was. The fact that they were both deprived of sleep since arriving to The Center did nothing to curb her fears for Brady. He needed rest. And now, to attempt to make a portal with her was pushing her anxiety to a new height.

But a night of planning with Zeus concluded with the truth… There was no more time to waste. Shamike couldn’t withstand an attack of any proportion. If Marin reached out in any way the remaining population might buckle. Karis hated thinking of her people bowing down to such a tyrant. And, then there was Azul. There was a chance he was still alive. But for how long?

“Nah, I’m a little tired but nothing bad enough to hold me back. I just don’t want you to overdo it.” He placed a hand over her stomach. “I can’t wait to be a family with you.”

Karis blushed and the little one inside of her kicked as if he or she agreed with what Brady said. “Me too.” She covered his hands with hers.

Leaning down, he rested his forehead on hers. “Let’s do this. Together.”

Inhaling his deep spicy scent, she closed her eyes and nodded. “I’m ready.”

He backed up, taking her hand. “Once we start, things are going to roll faster than we can keep up, and we won’t be able to stop it. As long as we do this together we’ll be fine. Just remember that.”

She smiled. “I guess we better get to it then.”

Brady pulled out a bag from one he wore around his waist, handing it to her. “For you, m’lady.”

Blushing deeper, she grabbed the bag. That was the one thing she hated about using her Syrenae gift—the fact that clothes were either shredded into pieces or she had to strip down before she got in the water.

Brady didn’t hesitate as he stripped down and shoved his pants into his bag. He winked at her before running into the water. Karis giggled as she watched his backside disappear beneath the dark surface.

Making sure no one was around, she did the same before darting into the cold sea. She took it back. The cold water before turning into a Syrenae was the worst part. Her tail couldn’t grow fast enough. Soon, the pink shimmers of her gift danced along her legs until a beautiful tail formed. The water around her felt warmer and no longer bothered her.

Brady was easy to find with his teal tail and glistening Syrenae mark trailing down his chest disappearing behind the scales under his navel. Even underwater—and with a tail—he was the most handsome man she’d ever seen.
